Do yourself a big favor and just go get it done! it kills me to see people ruin their hair and have a terrible outcome. Seriously you dont have to spend 200 to get highlights. Go to a fantastic sams or something and get it done for 35. it will look so much better.. its your hair not a lipstick you can decide you dont like. IF you do insist on doing it yourself go to a beauty supply store.. the dyes they have are much better quality with better toners and they will tell you what will work best with your hair and are there to answer any questions.

Go to Sally Beauty Supply, if you have one near you. They have several different brands, and tons of color swatches you can look at. I personally like Miss Clairol. You can ask the sales associate for advice, but some of them are not that knowledgeable. If your hair comes out darker than you expect, pick a color a shade lighter than the one you think you'd like. Don't neglect to do the strand test first, though, so you'll see in advance what the color will be like. You may have to do this a few times before you settle on one, but this will save you from more 'disasters'. Always, always do the strand test.

Revlon Color Silk is a non ammonia formula. It's cheap and works great. If your hair is long buy 2 boxes of it. NEVER EVER use an Ash Blond as it's base color is green (in all brands of hair dye) and will look odd under florescent lights and turn yucky from chlorine in a pool. Color Silk has several colors of blond that will do. Dark blond will probably be fine as browns might come out too heavy.

If you have a sallys in your area go there. Professional colors last ALOT longer than home hair colors. In addition to this you are able to customize a color for your hair so you can play with tones something you will NOT be able to do with box hair color.
The only problem is for someone who doesn't know about haircolor wouldn't know how to formulate a hair color for their hair.
This is whers sallys comes in. Many of the stores employ cosmetologists. So if you can talk to some of the employees ESPECIALLY a manager (b/c they have to KNOW how to do it to be a manager) they can help you formulate a professional color.
If you want to stick to home hair color you have to knwo that home hair color ALWAYS comes out darker than intended. So just know that this is the norm. So what you can do is pick a shade that is 1/2 -1 shade lighter than what you want so that you can get good results, or like I said go to sallys so they can customize a color formula for you.

before having my hair dyed professionally at a salon i tried many haircolor kits i should say that the best i ever used when i used to dye my hair myself were the little bottle of hair dye sold at sally beauty supply. just go in and find the color you want and ask one of the girls to help you out on choosing the products you need to achieve that certain color. and believe me, it is way cheaper and much much better than the color kits sold at stores. good luck finding the right shade!!! oh, and they sell this conditioners in little packages for a couple of cents i forgot the name though, they are located right next to the serums or oil polishing for frizzy hair. they come in a white package with burgundy letters and will leave your hair shiny and very smooth!!!

where do you buy your hair color product? Sally and Sir Guaan has some really good ones. They have the developer where you can choose from how strong or weak you want. My hair is really dark and when i purchase those from target or walmart, I don't get the result that i want. So i usually buy them at sally and it works great..
