Of course the safest place in the car is the center rear seat, but since you can't put both kids in that spot, you'll have to choose which one goes there.
Warning... Could cause future trauma and sibling rivalry... "Mom always liked you best! She put your car seat in the center!"

Have your eldest child behind the passenger seat and the youngest behind the driver seat. This works best as the older child will try to be independant and want to go and open the car door and get in of their own accord, which can cause problems if they are on the drivers side as this side is most exposed to other traffic etc. Good luck and safe driving!

Both seats should be certified child restraint safety seats facing the rear of the car. Equal distant spacing between the seats and the car's side windows would be the safest positioning. Child safety seats should be used with seat belts until the child reaches 60 pounds weight. No fair for the mother to hold her newborn baby in her arms while driving or being driven in the USA.

I think the best place to put your children one on the left and one on the right side of the car ,so that they are both seat belted in the car...if you put them in the middle they may go threw the window screen with just a small lap belt.

you should take the vehicle you are using the car seats along with the car seats to your local fire dept. they normally put them in for free and are trained in how to actually get them in correctly. If you want to do it yourself, make sure you use either the tether strap that is on the car seat and hook it to the metal hook down in your cars seat or the double C bracket that comes with the car seats and lock your cars seat belt around the seats. AS for the best seat in the car for the seats as long as its not the front, personally i would use the seat with the shoulder straps and not just the lap belt.

Yeah, of course the best solution would be to have a seat in the middle, but you do not have such a luxury. If you are not considering SUV with three seat rows, you do not really have much choice - either you expose your kids to the danger equally putting both seats on the sides, or you pick one to set in the middle :(
Good luck
