I think guys relate to the game and the players because in their teen years, they either WERE on the team or wished they were. But even those who dislike football in general seem to gravitate toward the Superbowl.
They remember their younger days and envision themselves on that Superbowl team. Men are also more competetive in the physical sense. Identifying with some great player who has done the "impossible" during a play also gives them that pleasure of thinking it was they that won the game!
Everybody loves that "great touchdown in the last seconds of a game." Guys view themselves, therefore, as THAT hero.

Um.... not just guys like the superbowl. Im a girl and its my favorite day of the year! lol. Its just a big day for people to get together and BBQ, drink beer, and watch sports. Its acually very fun.
