To give a background, I know what Oxycontin is, and I know how it works, so please do not post any information about the drug itself, read my question carefully, and please advise.

I am currently prescribed 80mg Oxycontin pills for chronic back pain, and I am 18 years old. I would like to know if this dosage is a large dose for 18 years old, as my pain is expected to be permanent, and I do not want a tolerance to develop to a point that I will not be able to get relief for the rest of my life. Thank you, and any additional advice or personal experiences are appreciated.

I work for 2 spine surgeons, we would never give someone your age 80 mg of Oxycontin. Why are you having chronic back pain at 18, do you have scoliosis or a herniated disc? What is your diagnosis, would epidurals help or a rhizotomy?

You are right to be concerned about creating a tolerancy for the drug. That is one of the things that I tell people because working with geriatrics, it is harder to solve some pain issues because they have been feed pills for so long. The one thing that I did find was a lydoderm patch, I don't know if you have tried it or asked to try, but it seems to work very well. Usually you put them on in the morning and take them off after 12 hours. Is is worth a try. I don't know if you could go with something more mild such as Ultracet that is non narcotic, but at any rate, the patch would seem to be the better of the two.

I cant take more then 20 mg of Oxycontin without throwing up,and Iam no stranger to pain medication myself.80 mg of oycontin is alot for anyone no matter what there age is and you are so smart to concerned about building a tolerance because that is exactly what happens.Have you tried taking less on days when it is tolerable?I have dejenitive disc disease and also suffer from back pain.I started taking so many vicodin(about 10 -750mg) a day, that I was wigging out completley if I didn't have any.Ended up in a methadone detox clinic.Iam now back on the vicodln.Go to web med and read everything you can about your concerns and good luck to you.I really feel for you.

Based on my info, the usual dose is 5-10 mg but higher if pain in chronic. My source does not say how much higher.

Physical dependence is possible, especially with long term use, but not very likely. Have you been taking lower doses for a while? Usually higher doses are needed over time as the body gets used to it.

Yes, that's a quite substantial dose, especially considering your age. I hope you have a whole team of people working on the problem with you. Anything we'd add here, not even knowing your diagnosis, would be pretty useless.

i don't know about dosing, and i don't know how bad your pain is but i would be afraid to take oxycontin. I have know 2 people who became addicted and had lots of mental issues with it. One had it for oral surgery and another had it for intestinal surgury. Be careful.
