You can rent bikes and ride around the mall monuments with them, from the WWII memorial to Vietnam Memorial etc. And not only that, they also do this as a bike tour with really funny tour guides. So you get exercise as you bike...kids love this, and the weather should be good when you are there. This is called Bike the Sites and I'm sure you can get more info at www.washington.org on it.

Also...my kids at that same age loved the DC DUCK tour...where the boat/bus actually changes from a bus into a boat and goes into the Potomoc...you've got to do that too!

Stay at a hotel with a pool...our kids love having a break there when we return and then we just read a book while we watch them in the pool, or jump in ourselves!

The Washington Zoo is a good one. It's right near the Marriott Wardman park, if you stay there, and that hotel also has a METRO stop onsite. GO on the METRO everywhere you can...clean, safe etc. Kids like it.

Those Segway tours are cool too...cool looking, I haven't tried one.

There is also a nighttime tour called something like Talking with Mr Lincoln that is cool....

I love Washington with kids!

they would probably really enjoy going to the Washington Capitols baseball game, as long as you buy enough hot dogs and soda.

i just remembered there are those pedal boats too at Tidal Basin, that's fun!

An absolute must-do is the Washington National Zoo. Admission is free - parking costs. The baby panda is still here, so that is a big thing to see.

You can go see Congress in action ... contact your local congressperson and get gallery tickets before you go.

There is a bus tour of Arlington Cemetery (tomb of the Unknowns, Kennedy's grave) and the monuments along the mall. The tour is a stop by stop tour ... that is you pay a fee, and go to the first stop. You get off, and don't have to hurry back, you can catch whichever bus you want.

The monuments are all worth while, but the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial are special. The FDR memorial is worth seeing. As is the Vietnam Memorial

Just outside of DC is Mount Vernon, George Washington's Home ... also, the Grist Mill and Woodlawn Plantation. Old Town Alexandria is a good place to visit, too.

Don't forget the White House.

With kids, obviously the National Zoo. That's off of Connecticut Avenue at the Woodley Park metro station if you choose to take the subway. There's also the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial and all that. You could take a Potomac River boat tour. They aren't all that expensive - you just pick up the tour in Georgetown. I always recommend that for visitors. You could also probably check out a Nationals baseball game while you're in town. If you have a car, you can drive up to Baltimore and go to the Inner Harbor or you can go to Annapolis.

Go to Chinatown. In addition to the best museums not on the mall (spy museum & american art), it's got a massive archway that looks really cool at night. The arena is there too, (and by the way, the Washington Capitals are a hockey team.)
