I don't know about the whole state of Alabama, but the city I live in...if you are in the police academy, you become a cop after you graduate. I work for our local Police Dept, so here's how it works. You get hired on as a recruit, go through the Academy, pass all of your test ( physical agility, Title 13= all the state laws, and your firearms test ) You will workout on a daily basis, we have females & males and there is NO cutting the females slack. You are required to do the same thing the guys do!! Once you graduate the Academy, you are assigned an FTO = Field Training Officer, they teach you the ropes.....I believe you FTO for 3 months, then you go solo. Our Academy is one of the best!! Like someone else said, going to your local police dept and asking to do a civilian ride along is a great idea, then you can see how exciting the job is, and ask tons of questions. Good Luck to you!!

Many states now require recruits to put themselves through the Police Academy now. After you receive your certification you then approach agencies who put you through a lengthy hiring process (physical, polygraph, drug test, back-round check, driving record, etc). This has changed as prior you would be hired first, then paid a salary while you were in the academy. In Florida having a criminal justice degree greatly will assist you in getting hired as long as your back-round is clean and your grades were good. Agencies are looking for certified quality officers. Unfortunately, as unpopular as this may sound, females have an extremely easier time getting hired now in this state and I am sure that reflects nationwide. Agencies now want their officers to somewhat closely match the communities they serve. As this profession is generally more dominated by males they try to offset that.
Keep in mind that many females make outstanding officers, many being better back ups than the males.
My belief is that a department should be run like a sports team. You only want the absolute best people out there protecting your family and life but......
GOOD LUCK with your career

It is no harder for a female. In some cases it can be easier due to hiring quotas. Most of the time job placement occurs while still in the Acadamy. If not it is REAL easy! Just check your local area and you will find many departments hard up for cops. Not enough people want to do the job and departments are always looking for good recruits.

depends where you are located and how high of a demand there is. of course cities and dangerous areas would need cops more. It isn't harder to get a job as a cop being a female but it's certainly harder to deal with all the "good ole boys" beauricratic crap.
thats why I dropped out of academy.
it was a rude awakening after my degree of what I didn't want to do. I just didn't fit it, it's an important question for you to ask because if you're not going to fit in or get along with other officers than you're ultimately not going to enjoy your job...no matter how much personal satisfaction you may get or no matter how much other people don't bother you.
Most departments want at least a bachelors + academy...you need a lot of drive and be willing to work terrible hours for a while.
once you take that oath you are an officer 24/7

MP does no longer help you more desirable than the different MOS in any military service. MP and civilian police have one ingredient in basic, the note police. it truly is it. military service does get you out contained in the international coping with others. Mos states that still have civil service checks supply all vets some extra factors on an the front try. difficult? you wager. on the on the spot very few are hiring and much opt for to be law enforcement officials. those that are hiring might want to correctly be very selective. Even back contained in the late ninety's at the same time as few had to be law enforcement officials and departments the position hiring heavy purely about 11% of those who exceeded the first the front checks fairly made it to the line as a sworn officer. in case you opt for to be a cop I advise you forged a tremendous internet. keep on with to all departments throughout that in advantageous condition one in each of those branch you'll fairly opt for to artwork for. As to what mr. cool says, properly what's elementary for him is to replica my previous Y!A profile and declare he replaced right into a cop and has some expertise. he's only a troll.

Well, first you have to get hired from the police department at least thats how it is with my state of Iowa. If you do get hired and you make it through the police academy and you decide to quit your job at that police station. You stand a very good chance of being hired somewhere else since you have been certified with the LEA (law enforcement academy). If you have any questions go to your local police station and get a ride along, then ask them all the questions you want.

In Arizona you get hired and payed by your department while you attend the adademy. There is a nation-wide shortage of police officers. You can get in just about anywhere. Most big cities have a lot of turn over. My department averaged 20% turnover a year for 5 years straight.

Depends on you and the place you apply. If certified you may have one up on an non-certified person. Normally to go through an Academy you need to be sponsored by an agency anyway right? I mean can anyone go through a police academy and be certified? What state is this?
