I hate to disagree with a vet, but I don't think any medicine can claim to be completely safe. There are going to be rare cases where patients have adverse reactions. My dog is one of those rare cases when it comes to Rimadyl. That said, Rimadyl, in the vast majority of cases, is safe and effective. You're just going to give it to your dog on a short term basis for pain. You shouldn't be afraid of giving it to him.

Its best to give it to him, it'll help with his pain. Short term use shouldn't hurt him at all. I've had 3 dogs on rimadyl when they got old and arthritic. It worked great and gave them a couple more years of mobility. It didn't save them from old age, but they made them feel a lot better. I'm sure it can be dangerous long term, but you won't be using it long term. Dogs bounce back quickly after neutering, so he won't need it after a couple of days. None of my dogs got liver problems from it, so maybe the long term problems don't set in for years. Since they didn't take it until they were very old, the only thing they got from the rimadyl was less pain and more joy during their last years.

YES give him the Rimadyl as directed by your vet. They gave you this medicine to ease your dogs pain! He's drowsy from the anesthetic that they used, most likely, but he's going to be in a lot of pain when it wears off completely if you don't give him the medicine. Rimadyl is a completely safe drug for dogs (considering that it's MADE for dogs!) and it does a very good job of taking care of pain. If your dog really means the world to you, why let him sit in pain when you've got a prescribed drug to help it!

Ditto Leftygirl & Allison. When our JRT/Bull Terrier X was spayed she was pretty groggy too. I do not remember the meds given for aftercare, but you can be sure we gave it to her. She is 8 y.o. and has been taking the generic version for several years now due to having some arthritis. She does get her blood tested every 6 months to check her liver, but that is standard proceedure with long term meds.
Your boy will be A-OK. Just follow your vet's directions. Kudos to you for being a responsible pet owner and neutering your furbaby.

Rymadyl has been shown to be a drug that is good for the ailment but bad for the patient. I read an advisory to vets that Rymadyl has been linked to liver damage in dogs and further studies were being retested. The dogs were described as in generally in good health except for arthritic conditions. I had a dog on that drug but i questioned my vet as to the dangers and was told that he had stopped giving it to his dog until the studies were done. I doubt Rymadyl is your dogs problem The anesthetics used take a few days to clear the patient

Your dog just had major surgery. If you have ever had surgery you know how TIRED you are for days following. Rimday is a VERY safe drug. It is a NON-STEROIDAL , ANTI-INFLAMMATORY which will help with discomfort. Give him a rimadyl soon UNLESS he got a rimdayl injection at surgery time. the injection lasts 24 hours
