were scolded and spanked for being RUDE. Is the lack of respect for one another shown here common in society? It that why kids feel bullied and go into schools with guns? Is that responsible for work place shootings? Are the internet sites so full of vile language because no one can see the ignorance spouting the filth? What happen to decency?

Decency took a vacation when Christianity (and thus, sky-high moral expectations) quit sticking around with society.

As our world whirls about ever-faster in a tizzy of self-indulgence (hey, if the Bible isn't true and God doesn't exist, I'm my own master aren't I?) and new self-confidence, the old Morality got thrown off somewhere along the way. The Internet provided a nice, relatively anonymous forum for venting , and the venting hasn't stopped since then.

And rights - don't forget about our rights! Stick a finger at us, and we'll stick a million-dollar lawyer in your face.

Today, it's all about loving the race/ethnicity/culture and hating the individual. Hey, doesn't that sound kind of familiar? Oh yeah, the North and the American Civil War...

It started by having 'Kid's Clubs' in restaurants. Then specialized television and marketing programs aimed at children. These media don't encourage any manners at all and will even celebrate their lacking. We all think it's cute, but it has a subliminal effect on the children. They grow up understanding that being mature is only an option and they should do what they want. It all started with the Boomers, and has now spread down the line. The Victorian Era didn't have seperate cultures for adults and children. The children grew up to be adults. Now the youngest generation is having to be more mature than their own parents. This could, in the end, be a good thing. It would be interesting to see how all this will develop.

People don't live in a good way anymore because they haven't been shown how to do so. It's up to the older generation to teach the younger people--and so far, my mother and father's generation is sorely lacking. I'm 24 and surprised that many people my age didn't get the scolding and spanking I did when I was younger. People where I come from aren't as lenient with their kids as the people above me are--after you spanked for a few years, all it took was that look from your mother, father or relatives and you KNEW you were in for it. And it's a perfectly civil thing to spank--it happens in most every culture and doesn't cause harm. It's our way, and it works.

Online is another story. Because people don't have a face to which they can attach what's said (usually,) psychologically there isn't really any reason for them to see those words as coming from another human being. Many people are that way on the phone as well, oddly enough.

I can tell from the disrespectful statements that many have made above that these people are also from a culture that doesn't honor its elders. I'm Eastern Cherokee, and that's very important to us. I don't know how these people learn anything.

Here in the R&S section, we're not being rude, just having some fun (and every now and then gaining some insight.)

I'm a teacher, so I know first hand how rude some of these children are. The only thing I disagree with you is the spanking. We know now many ways to discipline children with out physically harming them.

It happens because people haven't the courage to speak up for fear of looking bad or offending someone. It happens because we allowed schools to stop teaching manners or logic. It happens because we are afraid to hold our neighbors accountable for their behavior in public because they will make a scene.

Thank you for being polite. I may not be from your generation, but I am aware of the manners my family taught me, and one of those simple rules was that when you are somewhere where someone is being extremely rude and no other method is working, pointing out their rudeness, even in what they might consider a rude way,...

...is the most polite thing you can do for those who ARE being polite.

Keep speaking up.

Thank you.

You talk about a lack of decency, but isn't spanking also a lack of decency? Were there not more civil punishments opened to you? Do you want them growing up that pain and violence is the only way to solve problems or to punish unacceptable behavior?

i dont know how old are you...but in an previous time were decency was sooo important , black people couldnt go to the same places as white people and they were beaten and killed for no reason whatsoever. Back in time in a period where people were so respectful for other people´s beliefs, 6 million jews were killed just because they were jews.

Actually the kids police themselves pretty good. The truly ignorant are reported quickly and eliminated. It is the adults that are the problem.

I think you need to take a look around before you attempt to limit your statements to children.

Fact is, everyone is rude. And where, exactly, do you think the kids get it from? Hello!
