My daughter has gained like 18 pounds since November. The doctor checked her for a thyroid disorder and found nothing. She eats healthy, not much junk food and no sugary drinks. Any ideas on why she keeps gaining weight, what could be causing it and what can I do. She also walks on the treadmill for 10 min a day, plus plays basket ball and bowls. She is 10 years old.

she's probably hitting her growth spurt and will likely start her period soon. i started gaining more weight and had my period at 10, so i know this is entirely possible. also, since she is exercising quite a bit, she is probably building up more and more muscle which does weigh more than the baby fat that she is starting to lose.

i would suggest just letting her keep the same routine and don't fret about her weight so much. your fretting and making a big deal out of it, is not healthy for her self image. you don't want your daughter to end up with an eating disorder or anything. just encourage her and don't push her to lose weight or anything. remember, she is just 10 and she is growing, so please don't put her on a fad diet or anything like that which could interfere with her normal growth.

I have a friend whose daughter was doing the same thing, after a visit to the doctor, they found out that her liver was not working properly and was put on a dtrict diet and she is losing weight slowly, you might want to get this checked out. Better safe then sorry.

Um, maybe she is getting ready to hit a growth spurt. Don't stress it, especially since the Doc checked her out and found nothing wrong because all that might do is instill an unhealthy view of weight in your daughter.

try cutting out soda and sugary juices. Buy gatorade and water instead. Also try not buying any junk food for awhile, or buy non butterd pop corn. Have her run on the tredmill maybe 3 times a week for a hour each time. Don't stress it she is only 10.

I'd say take her back to the Doctor for a complete physical.....children do gain weight as they are growing up but that seems like a lot in a short period of time.

She may be going through a growth spurt.
Children are reaching puberty earlier and earlier!
Observe other females on both sides of the family, young and old!
Your answer may lie there!
