no missin dollar
The facts in this riddle are clear: There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

The 3 friends paid $30 but the room was $25 so guy from room service refund them $3 and the waiter kept the $2. (Add them up $25+$3+$2 = $30). There is NO missing $1.

If you want to know how much each friend paid then divide the $25 (cost of room) + $3 (refunded) which totals $28 by the number of friends which is 3.

28/3 = so each paid $9.33

There is no missing dollar. They paid $9 each which was $27. $25 for the room and $2 which the cheating waiter kept.

You told the riddle incorrectly. The men paid $25 for the room and the waiter got $2. Each man got $1 back.

25+2+1+1+1=$30

The men had paid 30 dollars. They got 3 dollars back. They paid 27 dollars. The 2 dollars the manager took makes it 25 dollars.
30-5=25
25+2(the manager's money)=27
27 is the amount the men paid.

They each got their dollar back. So technically they did spend 27 but it didn't go toward the room. Room was 25 no matter what they paid. They paid 2 to the bellhop. They paid 27(total) - 2(bellhop)=25(room)

So 30-2-1-1-1=25

$27(spent)+$3(back)=$30 OR
$25(spent)+$2(waiter)+$3(back)=$30

The two dollars the waiter took is included in the price of the room in this case.

If the waiter gave back three dollars and kept two. then 1 guy paid 10 dollars and the other two paid 9. therefore one dude paid more.
