I don't think religions cancel themselves out.
I think they just stop being relevant to changing times, and people walk away.
But they walk away to find a re-connection to the eternal - that thing which has not been blemished by name.

Even if we could prove beyond any doubt that there is no God (or gods), we'd still make them up. Why? To help us deal with the difficulties of life. It's a form of psychological adjustment.

Both. It depends on the particular religion and how society deals with it. Some religions, such as the Jim Jones cult, extinguish themselves by encouraging mass suicides and other dangerous activities that discourage people from joining the religion while killing off any who are brave enough to follow. Others are destroyed by outside persecution. Tribes kill each other all the time, and each tribe might have its unique religion that is wiped out in the extermination of the tribe. Some are replaced.
On the other hand, no religion entirely dies out. Its doctrines live on, some with only minute following, and as long as there is a single person living who believes in the doctrines of the religion, the religion is alive.

I don't think religions and beliefs disappear. Individuals may move on to other beliefs, but the old ways tend to hang around with other people. Animism is about as primal a religious belief as you can find, and it is widely practiced. Ancient Norse beliefs are coming back into vogue among white power advocates. New religious systems tend to adapt old beliefs rather than drive them out. Catholicism in Mexico has adapted many native practices along the way. Christmas was scheduled to fall during the Roman Saturnalia since people were celebrating then. Beliefs are persistent, and it is better to adapt them than to try extinguishing them.

Do mi spellings and erroneous grammatical BELIEFS
disappear when the correct versions take their places?
It is to be hoped so.
Do they extinguish themselves?
I doubt it.
You gotta have SOMETHING.

Many do, but not Christianity. It has stayed true and strong and will until Christ returns
