well, in birds the best way to elimate an undesirable behavior like screeching is to not reward it, what i mean is that when they make that noise, by telling them to stop and going over by them every time they do it kind of teaches them that when they make that noise they're getting your attention. so my advice is to just ignore them when they make the noise, just continue what you're doing and don't touch them or make eye contact, it may be hard at first and they might actually make the noise more often, but once they realize that they no longer get your attention by making that noise they should stop the noise.

Are you talking about budgies? There are many different types of parakeets, budgies being one type. If they are budgies, I can guarantee that you will not get them to be quiet. Budgies are chattery little birds. When they are happy and in a flock of their buddies, they are noisy. I've had budgies for over 10 years and have gotten used to the chatter. The only time they're quiet is when it's dark in the room, and sometimes for a little while in the late morning when they're napping.
Budgies love to compete with noise. If you have a TV or radio playing, or if people are talking, those budgies are going to try to be louder. Run a vacuum cleaner and they will practically explode with chirping!!

I'm not sure you are referring to budgies, though, because they don't really screech. They just chirp loudly in the spirit of joy and the love of companionship and life.

Hi there. What worked for me was to cover their cage for 1-2 minutes and then reward them when they are quiet. Also, it's difficult but don't overreact with bad behaviour or sometimes they try harder! I even taught mine to mimic whispering. It's hilarious but effective. I would whisper and say "Can you whisper like this? With two it will be more difficult but not impossible. Have a tweet year.

Great answer Mel!

The biggest thing is not to give up. Once they have learned a behavior, it may take months to unteach it.
