I'm going to the dentist soon, and I know I'll be getting a novocaine shot to numb part of my mouth. I remember when I was younger, that I was really scared and the shot hurt A LOT. That was about 4 or 5 years ago. Does it really hurt that much or was I just tricking myself?

dont even worry. its just like a regular shot. and it only lasts a couple seconds at the most. its really not bad at all. its not really even worth worrying about. trust me, ive had 10 teeth pulled, so ive had alot of novacaine

Do they actually still use novacaine? Or is it another painkiller now? Doesn't matter -- Anytime a dentist 'deadens the tooth', what they are actually doing is numbing the nerve to that tooth, so yes, you will feel some pain when the nerve is first hit, but then it gets better. Another thing to bear in mind is that several dentists have been using newer equipment in the last few years. I don't know about your dentist, but mine has a much smaller needle now and a very much more precise delivery system. It hardly hurts at all and starts numbing so quickly that subsequent shots are taken after the first of the numbness sets in, so they aren't felt as much. It also uses less painkiller, so if more is needed for any reason, the dentist doesn't mind administering more and it wears off sooner afterwards.

At first they do, then after a second they do not. LOL It is possible that they went into your bone. Any type of shot will hurt more when they go into your bone. What I do is go to a dentist that gives the happy gas...I am a total wimp when it comes to anything more than a standard cleaning. The problem is that it can be very hard to find someone that still uses the gas.

Well, dentists don't use Novacaine anymore now the mostly use Lidocaine. And it is a shot, so it isn't the most comfortable thing. Really it isn't that bad. Most dentists offer Nitrous oxide or laughing gas to relax you. They also apply a topical jelly to numb you first before the shot. If your dentist is good you will hardly feel it.

The shot doesn't really hurt as much as you think it will. You are just thinking about it too much. Your dental work would hurt much more if you didn't have the shot. Just try to relax and best of luck to you.

It shouldn't hurt. Your dentist will give you a topical numbing gel on your gums then give you the shot. You might feel pressure though.
