If there is no danger of fires, and other things, why couldn't they be used? It might be better than a roof falling in on folks. Course we now live in Arizona, but we did live in Texas, Ft. Worth area.

Heat tapes aren't suitable, but there are snow melting cables made for roofs. Buy them at http://www.snowmeltcables.com/. No I don't have any connection to that business.

Bad idea. When does the tape get turned on and when does it get turned off? Also, many roofs are made of shingles, and there are gaps between the top shingles, and it would be difficult to make a tight fit. Cold weather and rain would probably loosen it up.

Because you would then miss out on the sheer joy of shoveling your roof. Put on a metal roof. the snow doesn't stick. It slides off.
