I want to buy a new lense for my camera and I've noticed that a lot of photographers that use Nikon use the 50mm F 1.8 lens. I want to know if I can put that lens on my camera? And is there any other good lenses that I could look at getting, that are not terrible expensive?

You CAN put this lens on your camera and it is a good lens, but it will NOT autofocus on the D40. It WILL work with metering and all other functions, but it will not autofocus. You need an AF-S or AF-I lens if you want it to autofocus with the D50. These lenses will have those letters right on the lens along with the rest of the lens name.

If you want an autofocus "normal" prime lens, you will have to settle for manual focus, because I do not see a Nikon prine lens that is AF-S or AF-I.
