I've worked for pretty much all the cell phone companies and here is how it usually works.

Get ready to pay a deposit it varies between carriers but Sprint is usually more lenient in the deposit amount however they will restrict you at first and try to keep you in line. Cingular and Verizon will charge you around a 500$ deposit on average but it could be between 150 to 700$ i know Sprint at one time and may still charge a 125$ deposit.

This could be beneficial in keeping your bill at a reasonable rate but if you use your phone a lot it can be a pain in the butt.

Regardless of the deposit if you pay your bill on time every month until the contract ends you WILL get that back but beware you usually get it back as a credit to the bill not as cash back unless you call them ahead of time and let them know. It's cheaper for them to issue a credit instead of a check.

Here's my best advice to you..

Sprint(nextel is the same thing) will be your best bet unless they've had a major policy change but you need to do some research if you text message a lot Cingular doesn't do unlimited text or web browsing but they do have rollover which can be a lifesaver if you talk a lot one month but not another the next if your use averages the same rollover is pointless. Sprint will let you buy a bucket of minutes to keep you from going over.

So for you i'd say Sprint.

I use Cingular because of the rollover (my use varies) but there is no BEST carrier just the best one for you as an individual. I started out with Sprint in 1999 but that's back when their coverage was crap and i dumped them because of that. I may go back when my Cingular contract ends as i use a lot of data.

If they all require a big deposit then find out who most of your friends use and go with that companies prepaid service. Your minutes will cost a LOT more but you'll have no contracts and can pay as you go.

and for the love of God READ YOUR CONTRACT AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS! They'll save you from "hidden costs". If you work for a major corporation like i do they may have discounted offers and no deposit required promos. I get 20% off my bill every month through my employer.

Cingular....you will just have to pay a $150 deposit but you will get it back in 1 year if you make your payments on time and if you sign to a two year agreement. I didn't have any credit at 18 when I got my first cell phone either but I went with Cingular and they just made me pay the deposit since I had no credit.

if anyone of those companies don't run credit checks, use it. Did you call the companies and get rates? credit standards?
Cingular is credit based.

Do you have a metropcs.com out there?

When I was 18 I had no credit when I went to get a cell phone. My boyfriend (who is now my husband) was just added onto the contract. Lots of parents do that to help out their kids, but just remember that if yours do that, if you are delinquent in any way on your contract, it affects your cosigner's credit.
