My bird, a lovebird, has been doing this weird thing where he nods his head up and down and then seems to try to gag something up. He will sometimes scratch his beek and then he will open his beek and stretch out his neck as if he is trying to get something out of his throat. He is about 4 years old and i need to know if i should make an appointment with the vet or not. has anyone else ever had this problem? PLEASE, i really need to know whether this is bad or not. Please help! Thanks!

How long have you have you owned your bird?

i have owned him for 4 years = ) but hes never done this before ...

Where did it come from?

he came from Petco

Any changes in the birds appetite?

Not that i have seen..

Is your bird moving around the cage?

well this event only usually happens in the morning but no hes usually just kinda sitting on a pirch but if i scare him or something (cause i get scared when he does this) then he starts moving around some.

Where is the poop on the bottom of the cage? Is it in one location? Or is it scattered around the bottom?

no its pretty much all over the place, he does have favorite spots though

When birds get sick, they get sick very FAST! I think you should take the bird to the vet to see if there is a foreign body that he has consumed, or something else going on. If you want to and are able... look inside his mouth and see if you see anything. Only do this if you are trained in restraining a bird... aka with a towel. I would suggest a vet visit would not hurt. A basic check-up should be in order and on record so you can track him throughout his lifetime. Also if you are not a long-time bird owner, it is a very good idea to talk to a vet about proper care since most bird problems are related to husbandry issues.

Good luck with your birdy.

Many birds pick up strange habits to us. He is eating and drinking and active as ever. I think he is fine and you will also be fine. It could be a regurgitation gesture, but I doubt it because no vomitus is present. We may not always know our fids' behaviours, but I'm sure he is well taken care of. Have a tweet year.

If your bird is still breathing, whistling and carrying about as usual i would not worry. Sometimes birds just develop some strange vices/habits-- but i cant know for sure if something is wrong with her since i cannot see her conditions-- if you are worried and KNOW this isnt your birds character then i would advise you to take him to a vet! =) good luck!

Not sick at all, just in love with you. This is the way that birds show affection to their owners. Not all birds will do this however so you should fill very special. :) Congrats your bird is very happy with you!!

Awwww... He is bonded to you or something in his cage. He is trying to feed it like he would a mate.

Don't worry, it is completely normal, if not a little gross.

My Indian Ringneck feeds my shoulders. I keep telling her that they aren't hungry, but she doesn't listen. lol
