I hear people arguing about the 10 commandments all the time and then I hear others saying that all you need to do is "believe in Christ" because we are saved by "Grace" but, I thought believing in Christ means following his example (keeping the commandents) not just believing he is/was a real person. I really think that the commandments are a test of obedience(which protect us) and salvation is God`s gift to us because we love HIM and we show HIM by trying to keep his commandments. What do you all think?

Clearly Christ wants us to keep His commandments.

John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:21 - He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 15:10 - If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

First, it's true that the most important thing is for you to believe in Christ and to be saved (which is done by grace). You acknowledge your need for Him, admit you're a sinner (as the Bible states we all are), and ask Him to be your savior. Plus... you have to mean it. This isn't a magic prayer, and poof, you go to Heaven. ;)

The Commandments were given to the Jewish nation in the Old Testament, when God's people were under the dispensation of the law. They lived, died, and were saved according to the law. NOW we're under the dispensation of grace... we get saved by grace. Technically, the Commandments don't really apply to Gentile believers, but they are still good guidelines to live by in obedience to God.

Salvation is God's gift to us because He loves US... not the other way around. Did you love God before salvation? Probably not. But yes, Jesus said that if we love Him, we'd keep His commandments... which in the New Testament was to "love one another".

The people who think all you need to do is follow the Commandments are people who've probably never read a Bible outside of church. It's just not biblical... you need to be saved above all else.

To be saved, you need to believe in Jesus and repent. We are saved through God's grace, but I would argue that salvation is our gift from God because He loves us. His love came before our love. We do need to try to keep the commandments because that is what our gracious, forgiving and loving Lord told us to do.

You seem to be getting at some of the Christians today who are all about love and nothing about anything else, and I totally agree with that. God is love, certainly, but He will also punish those who don't repent.

I totally agree with you. Read Matthew 7:21.
What's the point of believing the captain of a ship can take you across the ocean if you don't intend to get on the boat?

No, actually Jesus gave a specific set of things he expected. Read about them.

JESUS is a lot of HARD work for NO REWARDS. The reward is by doing!

To me ,it means that someone greater then life came to take my punishment for my sins,my selfishness, my desire to have things that i don't need ,my unthoughtfulness, and any other mistakes that I might in this life. He took on all the pain, the sorrow, the loneliness that we have on this earth. I would be lost without Him . He is my dearest friend, and I can call on Him and He will always be there waiting , lovingly waiting to come in my life.

I think you are on the right track. Church Leaders in the last 50 years or so have tried to use Paul instead of Jesus to simplify the process of getting more Church members. - I wonder why?

To believe in Jesus Christ is accepting him as your personal Lord and Savior. This means to pray 1.Admit to God you are a sinner 2. Believe Jesus is God's son 3. Confess you faith in Jesus as your savior and Lord. If you want to do this right now then please pray something like this
Dear Heavenly Father i know that i am a sinner and i ask you to forgive me of all of my sins Lord i really do believe that Jesus is your son and that he lived a perfect life for me
and Lord i ask you to come into my life and make me new
please let me be like you I love you lord in Jesus name amen.

I personally thank you my new brother in Christ (if you sincerely prayed that) for taking the time to read this.
I will be praying for you.
