I beleive in patriotism, and i myself am becoming a United States Active Duty soldier this summer... but i do not beleive we should be in Iraq right now... We over threw their dictatorship... set them up with a democratic government... great... now get the hell out... sitting in and preventing a civil war in which we do not have a part of is not the thing to do... either join the Sunnis or the Shiites and help one of them out... or leave n help the country after the civil war... simply put

There was a long build up to the invasion of Iraq. I personally believe that prior to the invasion Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Bush were:
- Mentally in the wake of 911. We had invaded Afghanistan, which clearly was a threat harboring Al Queda, terror camps, and the taliban
- Blinded by the neo-con doctrine of American supremacy. This lead to bias in the review of intelligence
The agenda? In my opinion not oil. I think they really believed that "bringing democracy to the Middle East" would result in a safer, more predictable world.
I think they were wrong - Democracy isn't by itself an answer (look at Hugo Chavez..) and a lot of people are not ready for it.
Am I "with" the war. While I think invading Iraq was a mistake with 20/20 hindsite, the realist in me says "we are there". We broke it, we must fix it. I am somewhat hopeful that recent overtures to Iran, the sacking of Rumsfeld, the appointment of Gates, and the new commander (who seems to actually know something about insurgencies) mean we are changing tactics from gunslingers to nation builders. Because that is what we have to do.
Too bad all those lessons learned during WWII about how to do this were lost
(like don't get rid of the entire bureacracy when you invade, they are the only ones who know how to run the country, like keep services going - that's kinda important to the populace).
We've already squandered a lot of opportunity, and the mistakes will be hard to correct. It's incumbent upon us to do so.

I am "with it".
I am interested to see why you hate it. My guess is you don't have any good reason. Why aren't you against the war in Afghanistan too?
This war is more important than most people realize. If we were to lose then we better start preparing for World War III with Iran. Do you think its a coincidence that Iran is directly between Iraq and Afghanistan? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe Bush knew exactly what he was doing the entire time by surrounding Iran.
To Blankman: If Saddam had nothing to hide why was he not complying with the inspectors and not letting them search as they pleased? Yea, I wonder why they didn't find anything.

I still don't understand why that war ever started. None of the terrorists were from Iraq. Saddam had no hand in 9/11. He did NOT have a single weapon of mass destruction. He committed human rights atrocities, yes, however this was not the reason for the invasion. If so then China, North Korea, Singapore and other Countries would have been targeted. Why then was Saddam removed from power and imprisoned? And his sons executed? Why is there an ongoing war even after his execution? How is it that Iraq today is more unstable and more dangerous than ever before in History? Why are the US and allied forces making protection deals with the 'enemy'? When will this war end? In the meantime the Taliban has regrouped and the Canadian Army is understaffed and ill equipped to do anything effective in this regard. My theory is Bill Laden either in Afghanistan or in Pakistan just waiting for the right time to surface! Either way-I'm sure he's not in Iraq. I think Alberta had better keep the oil sands situation under their hat in case we (Canada) get accused next of having weapons of mass destruction.

Dumb question, no one is "with" or for any war.
I support the military & the reason for staying, but I hate war.
My son leaves shortly for Iraq as an Officer & it frightens me but Saddam terrified hundreds of thousands of people that he had mass murdered. The UN was frightened by the fact that Iraq refused any inspections for mass weapons. If they never had any, why do you suppose they refused the inspections? hummm!! Why do you suppose all of Congress except a couple voted to support sending the soldiers? They all saw the same reports as the President. The lie is that did not know or understand - they knew but now that things are not going the way we had hoped they are trying to step away from their votes. Big old fat liars - the whole bunch of them.

I hate wars, but I must support some wars - especially this one! Iraq poses a terrible threat on USA. I don't care if some people get killed by the terrorist, who Saddam supports; but I'm afraid that my family will be the victims if they target our city! So I hope that God will concentrate to protect the people like me, who knows what to do in order to protect ourselves, rather than those who count on miracle!

This has been answered so many times that it's getting silly.
Iraq invades Kuwait. We defend Kuwait and our national interests by giving them military support.
Iraq attacks our advisor and people.
We warn them.
They do it again.
We warn them and give more support.
They do it again, we help Kuwait push them out.
They continue to attack, we push them back farther.
This continues until we push them back to Baghdad.
They agree to a cease-fire (not peace). They agree to U.N investigations of their weapons programs (proven WMDs at the time).
They mislead, and then lie outright to the U.N. inspectors repeatedly over a period of a decade.
The U.N. repeatedly threatens them with 'Serious actions'. They do so for TEN YEARS! They do NOTHING!
The United States and allies beg for the U.N. to enforce the conditions that Iraq agreed to.
During this time, Iraq tries to assassinate one of our Presidents, attacks our planes, and continues to kill their own people in smaller numbers than before, but still very high, all while bragging to their neighbors that THEY STILL HAVE WMDS!
All this is public record, but some people can't be bothered to look past the political nonsense spewed by both sides to actually look at the records.
Finally, the U.S. makes some serious threats, and when Iraq still doesn't stop, the U.S. does what the U.N. kept saying they would do but wouldn't.
We joined Iraq in war. They had been warring with us on and off for the whole decade. We observed the cease-fire.
Our enemies think we should have let Iraq continue to deceive the U.N. (the U.N. said they were being deceived and lied to, and Saddam told everyone that he was deceiving the U.N.), and continue to let them attack us while paying the families of suicide bombers to attack our ally, Israel.
Seems our only mistake was trying to nation build afterward.
We won the war. It was the political decision to continue staying in the country to try to build a stable nation that was foolish.
As a reward, we are constantly undermined by ignorant citizens in our own country, enemies of our country, and actively seditious people in our country.
Solution? Bomb them next time. Give them two weeks to vacate three cities. Bomb one of them to the ground after two weeks of warning.
No ground troops. No nation building. Period.
They do it again, then five cities, bomb two. Six cities, bomb three. Etc., until they understand.
We will not tolerate attacks on our citizens or country. If you do, you will know what to expect. If your government is stupid enough to do it, don't vote for them. If your country is a dictatorship, then overthrow them.
It is not our job to be the world's scratching post just so people too cowardly to do anything to save themselves.
We have a right to defend ourselves. Hate it if you wish.
Frankly, if you want fair, go back to elementary school. I prefer justice, which means I side with the United States before other countries.

During WWII people sacrificed for their country. There was gasoline and food rationing. There was deaths by the tens of thousands of US military every year. What have you sacrificed for your country? Or are you just tired of hearing about the others who have? Maybe a little guilt that you haven't done your part? Just sitting around playing video games while others fight for your freedom?
