I was baking a cake and one of the eggs I put into the batter was all bloody.

Of course they're safe to eat & they are not fertilized.
My old hens laid quite a few with blood spots & there wasn't a rooster around.

This is from the American Egg Board.

Blood Spots
Also called meat spots. Occasionally found on an egg yolk. Contrary to popular opinion, these tiny spots do not indicate a fertilized egg. Rather, they are caused by the rupture of a blood vessel on the yolk surface during formation of the egg or by a similar accident in the wall of the oviduct. Less than 1% of all eggs produced have blood spots.

Mass candling methods reveal most eggs with blood spots and those eggs are removed but, even with electronic spotters, it is impossible to catch all of them. As an egg ages, the yolk takes up water from the albumen to dilute the blood spot so, in actuality, a blood spot indicates that the egg is fresh. Both chemically and nutritionally, these eggs are fit to eat. The spot can be removed with the tip of a knife, if you wish.

Yes, bloody eggs are OK to eat. They are fertilized eggs. They are hard to get these days. Most egg producers (no, not the chickens, the farmers) try to keep the rooster from the hens.

Safe? Yes. It will cook like blood in meat does when you bake the cake, and unless it's a large amount (like over a tbsp) it probably won't affect the taste.
Pleasant? I don't know if I would eat that.

Well... no one will get ill or anything... but this egg was well on its way to becoming a chicken, so basically, you put some chicken blood in your batter.

Not a typical cake ingredient. In fact, rather gross.

Still, it's unlikely to affect the overall taste - but if it was me, I wouldn't have used that egg. *shudder*
