We just got a new puppy schnauzer 4 weeks ago, also have a 4 year old schnauzer. In the past 7 days the older schnauzer has gotten a stuffy nose and has had 3 episodes of breathing problems. Could this be kennel cough from the puppy although the puppy has no symtoms or could it be allergies or common cold?

his breathing episodes are kinda like asthma attacks. there is no discharge from his nose it just sounds stuffy. The puppy has had all shots and was examined by the vet 3 days after we brought her home. My daughter and i both have colds at the same time so i just thought he had caught it from us. Although he had never been sick and is up to date on all of his vaccinations.

Ya it sounds like the older Schnauzer is allergic to the younger one.

It depends on the situation, really. If your puppy has been vaccinated (with a Bordetella) from kennel cough, he could definitely carry it without symptoms to your other dog. Dogs can get kennel cough from just about anywhere though- their yards, from people, from anything at all that has been near something that was carrying it. It could also be a cold, or allergies. What do you mean by "breathing problems?" Do you mean that he's having a hacking cough? It's hard to say based on your description. If his stuffy nose has a discharge of any color besides clear (yellow, green, red, etc), you need to take him to your vet. I would reccomend seeing your vet anyway, just because the symptoms are so broad that they could be a number of things. Good luck!_

Kennel cough would be a cough/gag looking episode. It incubates about a week, so unless the pup was coughing a week ago...your older dog would not be having kennel cough. With that said, the older dog might need to be examined by a vet so see if it seems mild, or something more serious.

Your schnauzer needs to see a vet.
