PERCOCET http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/Uses/0,3915,5%7CPercocet,00.html
This medication is a combination of a narcotic (oxycodone) and a non-narcotic (acetaminophen) used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Oxycodone works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, and acetaminophen decreases the formation of prostaglandins, therefore relieving pain.
OXY IR...http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/Uses/0,3915,515%7COxycodone,00.html
This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It acts on certain centers in the brain to give you pain relief. Oxycodone is a narcotic pain reliever (opiate-type).

RE:
Percocet vs Oxy IR?
What's the difference between Oxy Ir 5 mg and Percocet 5/325? I know that Percocet is oxycodone and aspirin and Oxy Ir is just oxycodone...but is there really a difference?

WOW, nothing but opinions in here, and almost no straight answers. the only difference between the 2MEDICINES is that the percocet has tylenol(acetaminophen) in it. The active ingredient in them, oxycodone, is the same. you're still getting the same amount of pain reliever, but now you're not taking the extra tylenol. That extra pain you feel, could be from the swelling. Take a regular tylenol 325 as needed, but don't take it everytime you take your medicine as that would defeat the point of switching from percocet to IR. I got off the percocet and moved to the IR too, and it's gonna be a little rough, cuz all changes require an adjustment period. Don't worry about the propaganda posts. If you're a chronic pain patient like me, you know that pain medicine doesn't get you high or anything, and if you stay on schedule, and use it exactly as your doctor tells you to, you should be alright. just remember, if you're swelling gets out of hand, take some anti inflammatory. it's safe to take tylenol with your medicines, but use it sparingly to prevent liver damage.
Also, don't take more than you should, not because it's dangerous or anything, you can actually handle a lot of pain medicine as a chronic pain patient, but because you don't want to screw up your tolerance. that's why you have to stay on schedule. if you take to much you will become immune to it, and the medicine won't work anymore, and if you take to little, you will lose the build up in your blood stream, and again the medicine won't be as effective. stay on schedule, tough it out until you adjust, and supplement with tylenol as needed, but not everyday.
I hear OXY IR is stronger than percocet, because it's "uncut" with tylenol. vis-a-vis a purer form of the drug even though the quantity is the same. On the other hand I hear that percocet is better, because you get the extra tylenol for the inflammation. the difference varies from patient to patient. hang in there. as a chronic pain patient who fell of a 60FOOT cliff, and shattered every single bone in my body, i know how bad it can hurt, and how it effects your life. relax, do what the doctor tells you, and stay on schedule. schedule is the key. take on the dot everyday like your supposed to in order to get the best pain relief possible.
if you have trouble adjusting give it a while. if you're still hurting by your follow up even though you're ON SCHEDULE, tell the doctor you were doing better with the acetaminophen, and they'll probably put you back, or tell you to supplement with tylenol. god speed.

I took percocet for 6 years 5mg 325,, I got doc to switch to Oxy IR 5mg as all that acetaminophen is not healthy for your liver,,,in fact very toxic if you are consuming 5 or 6 percocet daily or 2000mg acetaminophen.

Oxycodone IR is immediate release Oxycodone. Unless it states with apap, it's straight Oxycodone. Immediate release means that it dissolves as soon as it reaches your stomach making it rapidly available for absorption into your bloodstream for most rapid pain relief. Hope this was informative. Good luck, and God bless!
