Show them a picture of some lava, or a picture of a village damaged by an eruption. and maybe something like...these are the modern repercussions of volcano eruptions, but volcanoes have existed since the beginning of our Earth.
Then go on to explain all about plates and how volcanoes form....and so on and so forth.

There are two types of volcano's. A hole in the mantel and seduction zones that move towards the core and heat till boiling point. An example of hole in the mantel is the Illusion Islands and Hawaii. Subduction zone volcano's are located on coasts where one plate is being overridden by another.
