My zebra finches are about to lay eggs and I was wondering how much nesting material they need. I gave them a box of the Ultracare nesting material and they've used the whole box already. They keep trying to put a stick of that spray millet stuff in the nest. I don't know if they need more or not, because I heard that too much material will bury the eggs too deep so the mother won't be able to keep them warm.

Hi there. They should be fine with what they have. Since egg laying is stressful, be sure to add chopped hard cooked egg to their food for the extra protein, calcium and other nutrients. Try to convert to an appropriate pellet food and limit seeds to 10% with fruits and veggies 10-20%. It seems that all seed diets lead to malnutrition. Some studies reveal a decrease in egg binding with proper nutrition.http://www.zbirds.com/Breeding.html This article may help. Congratulations and have a tweet year

They will fill the nest and have to lay the eggs elsewhere... the nesting string, some dryer lint and maybe some dry grass is enough.

That should be pleanty. They will continue to build as long as they are given material. The idea is to give some traction for the chicks. That way their legs will grow properly.
