Belief: An idea or concept that one is willing to act upon.
The above definition has served me well for at least 50 years. It comes from the American philosophic school of Pragmatism.
I really started over 50 years ago to define faith. I felt that there was no functional definition for either word in the English language.
In my own survey of a large university campus, I found that belief and faith were, as in the dictionary, considered much the same thing. Belief and faith were trusting ideas one could not prove. For faith you just grunt harder.
I didn't see where these definitions answered anything for me and certainly were nothing one could use in philosophy, psychology, religion or debate.
So 50 years ago I locked into the definition of belief given above. For the time being I classed trust as the major synonym for faith; based on the campus survey and religious writings put forward at the time.
(While I had a synonym for faith there was still no definition.)
Belief I held was a mental response or position while faith was an emotional response or position. To this day I maintain the above definition of belief as fully workable in any setting. My definition of faith has changed completely.
------------Ans..
How is it possible to believe in something you don't have proof of? Well a scientist has to believe to set up any controlled experiment. The researcher has no proof but has an idea he is willing to act upon.
A totally insane person has no proof for the ideas acted upon. You might question that they have a will; but they cannot be ruled out of belief under the above definition.
The second problem with the word belief is that it is constantly interchanged with the word faith when the two are entirely different. Because belief has a constant working relationship to faith; this misuse results in constant confusion. Certainly worthless for study purposes or in the mental and emotional lives of countless people.
Years ago a preacher used a corner bus stop as an example of faith. You go to the bus stop and wait expecting the bus to arrive. "That's faith." he said.
I said then and now, that is belief and not faith.
My idea of faith was and is: You go down to a corner where there is no bus stop and the bus arrives. That is faith! Trust me, it requires belief, but they are not the same.

The right side of the brain is working a lot harder in some people than others. Those who have the left side doing overtime don't usually just believe in something unless they have proof.

There are lots of things to believe in but real faith is not left without evidence. But it is still faith because the evidence is not reproducible on a scientific experiment or visible under a microscope. No, the evidence that God gives is pure, it is clear, it is undeniable, but it is personal, it cannot be shared directly not can you prove it happened. You can try to explain it and describe it but in the end, no one will understand until they have experienced it for themselves.
How does an astronaut describe weightlessness in a way that you can truly understand? How do you describe the color blue to a person who has never seen? How does a mother describe her feelings just after giving birth to a child and make them understand?
You see, there are many, many things in life that just have to be experienced before we can fully comprehend. Faith in God is just such a thing.

Believe means to accept as true, to trust. Proof is evident in the impossible being made possible through God.

Faith is the opposite of fear or doubt. It works for good or evil! Hebrews 11:1 says: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for."
Scienctists use a lot of faith. They hope for "proof" for a theory and find something that they can believe in.
Psycologists teach that you can achieve what you really believe in.
However, having an opinion or theory is not equal to having faith. Faith must be beyond doubt to work. And it can work miracles!

If you don't have proof of something, obviously you believe something else. It's human nature to be curious. When we can't find an answer, then we have to start making up things.

Do you believe in Mohammad? You have no proof he was a real person. Most of the reliable history on him is not good.

Scientists believe in Worm Hole and Black Holes but no one has truely every seen one up close.
Scientists still believe a Unified Field Theory is possible.
That one theory that binds everything together.
