It's a new optical disc format developed by SONY. Disc capacity is far greater than current generation DVDs (I believe up to 50GB+) and they're primarily used to offer High Definition content. Blu-ray movies are encoded at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels compared to 720 x 480 pixels used by today's DVDs. For playback they require a compatible player; currently you'll find this feature on the Playstation 3 or stand-alone Blu-ray players starting at near $1,000.

It's Sony's High Def, Next generation DVD standard. Very few players (PS3 has Blu-Ray), kinda expensive. Higher density than HD DVD

Very complicated.. to make the long story short, it's a new CD scheme... hold more info per CD plus it's faster than conventional CD's.
