I know some of them were doing the preening and grooming thing, but I wasn't sure why all of them except maybe 2 in the pet store were all crowded together, some sleeping, etc. I mean they didn't even have room to squirm. It was like they had all been glued together, they were that close. It didn't seem cold in the building, and the other enclosures with birds had no clustering behavior. What gives?

It's a comfort kind of thing. They do this, to comfort themselves, and eachother.... and, to keep warm. Even 'if' it didn't seem cold in the store.... it's just a 'thing'. Some birds prefere this 'crowding'... and you might see one or two of them, that aren't really all that close to the others.... it's all in preference. But the majority, 'need' to, and like to do it. Totally harmless, and 'natural' behavior. : )

Parrots are flock animals; meaning in the wild they survive in flocks (large groups). They do this for warmth, protection and to help find food. Once a pet parrot bonds with its owner, we become their flock. They look to us for all their social needs. That's why when not given enough attention by their owner, parrots can develope behavioral problems such as screaming or feather picking. They are very social.

Hi there. These birds of course are flock birds which points to protection and socialization Given that their environment has not been stable in their lives, it may be behaviour to fend off fear and uncertainty. May they find great homes and you have a tweet year.

Birds are very social creatures, and that seems to be the reasoning behind this.

In simple terms: they really like to be together, they are pack animals and prefer to live with others! They love to snuggle together! =)
