If I were considering a Labrador Retriever...

My major concerns would be:

Unstable temperaments. Labrador Retrievers used to be one of the safest breeds you could buy, but sadly, this is no longer the case. Obedience instructors and behavioral consultants are seeing more and more Labrador Retrievers who are neurotic, hyperactive, or dominant/aggressive. It's the unfortunate result of popularity that the typically glorious Labrador Retriever temperament can no longer be taken for granted.

Labrador Retrievers are not exempt from any of these types of aggressive behavior. In fact, aggression in Labs is often overlooked because most of their behavior seems noncompetitive and easygoing.

There is no such thing as a dangerous or vicious breed. It is all in socialization. The only thing that actually exsists is bad owners. People who do not socialize and/or train their dogs. Then regardless of breed, the dog becomes a nuisance and sometimes even a threat.

Any dog of any breed- under the right conditions can become a very hostile, aggressive and nasty dog, regardless.
Some breeds can cause more damage than others. Think Poodle then think German Shepard-it's all in how they are designed.
I know some very, very loving pitbulls. I know they can be very great dogs so I do not believe all pitbulls are mean vicious animals-they are not.
I don't know who's raising the labs you've met but I personally have never met an aggressive or ill tempered lab.
Pitbulls are seen as being more viscious because they're a lot of them being raised to be vicious as fighting dogs, guard dogs or just ignorent assed people who want to be cool and have a mean pitbull to pull around to make their sorry asses look tough. Unfortuneately it has damaged their reputation. I remember when Rottwielders were public enemy number one.
Try not to take it to heart-I understand what you mean.
Labs are no better or no worst. It's all in the breeding and training.
Sorry you're feeling so frustrated and angry about this.

The reason people think that Labs are getting more aggressive is that the pounds are saying crosses are purebred labs. Take these puppies- http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=7375152 I can tell because of their eyes that they are crosses, not Labs.

My husband had a dog that definetly looked Pitbull attack him yesterday, and the owner said it was a Lab. We know Labs, and that was NO Lab.

I was raised with Labs, my mother was a breeder, and my dog has had a couple litters of her own. Out of well over 1000 dogs that came through there, only one bit once that wasn't a typical puppy.

One dog does not constitute a whole breed's temperment. There is a reason AKC does not recognize a Pitbull as a dog breed and some areas are trying to outlaw them. A purebred lab is the #1 dog in the US for a reason... They are known for their incredible temperment.

I'm glad that you've had good experiences with Pitbulls; I haven't. I've been bit by one, my horse has been attacked by two others, my dog had his ear ripped off by one (luckily it wasn't his neck) and we had to take a hose to that one to get his jaw unlocked from my dog's leg. I've never known one, especially a purebred, that I could trust when the owner wasn't there. The dogs were always fine when the owner was there.

I think it is sad that People are crossing Labs with Pitbulls, because I think it is creating a dog that cannot be trusted 100%. They can be really mellow, but then turn on a person.

Dude, you're crazy. I'm not sure what your deal is but they're nuts.

My lab is the most calm dog on the planet. He's my 2 yr old's best friend. I don't doubt there are *SOME* pitbulls who are good dogs, but I also know there are many bad people who are attracted to pits for the wrong reasons.

Any dog can attack under the right circumstances. We had to put down a golden retreiver- YES! A GOLDEN RETRIEVER because it bit my son completely unprovoked!!!

Labs are bred for calm temperament. The dogs they noticed with aggressive temperaments were removed the breeding pool. They want big, dopey, happy go lucky, calm but active labs.

I agree that breed-specific laws and regulations are ridiculous and that people should stop spreading untruths about put bulls and other similar breeds, but if you are being honest here, and all of the Labrador Retrievers that you know are crazy and aggressive, you're in the minority. I have seen MANY aggressive dogs, whether in my training or veterinary practice, and they are rarely Labs. They are certainly being poorly bred and not all of them are cuddly family dogs like they are portrayed, but it's unheard of for ALL of the Labs you know to be aggressive.

I love Pit Bull Terriers just as much as I love any other breed, and I agree that their stereotypes are dumb, but no one can say that these stereotypes are unfounded; these dogs were BRED for aggression. Just because the ones you know are "all nicer than the crazy labs!" doesn't mean it's true for the rest of them.

i disagree with you on the part that labs are naturally aggresive. in one of your websites it says they are just now becoming aggresive because of bad breeders and popularity so it is not natural, it is a mutation. i agree that pitbulls are usually nicer than other dogs. the reason why a lot of dogs are aggresive is because as the popularity of a dog rises, more stupid idiots want to buy them. these stupid idiots dont know how to properly raise a dog so they come out fukced up. some proof is the increase in aggresiveness in labs (they are currently the most popular dog breed in the USA) and the Pitbull which is very popular. if you notice, the most popular dog breeds are usually also the most aggresive. so i believe all dogs are naturally good but as more and more idiots own them, their genes get screwed up which makes them aggresive in the future. this is why i think people should take a test before being allowed to own a dog.

well they are now showing Rottie's are agressive now too. So any breed can be agressive. It's just how you look at it.
Rottie's in one place are agressive, running loose and attacking people, chows i heard are agressive i odnt know about that.
Labs are hyper along with any hearding or sporting breed may nip with play and bite too hard. Pit bulls been labled for a long time since there history is nothing bud bad news ( l love pits to death). Any agressive dog that acts out towards people is the result os abuse as puppies or had tramaitc lifes from the people who had them or their up bringing before human contact(stray). So There is no such thing as and agressive dog. It's how you look at it.

I think Chiuhauhas are evil ankel bitters, but that dont mean they are. lol

Where I live there are tons of labs, its a big bird hunting area. I've never seen an aggressive one, except for licking, but I've certainly seen my share of stupid ones. We had the dumbest lab in the universe, but he was loveable. It depends on the dog and the owner. A dog thats socialized with other dogs and people at an early age will be a good dog. A dog thats abused and mistreated will turn into a frightened shell of itself or become aggressive, you can't predict which. No dog should be allowed to run unsupervised. People can be hurt, or the dog can get hit by a car.

Add that statistically labs have the highest incidence of hip dysplasia.
It isn't that Pitties are more aggressive per se, it is that when aroused by other dogs, they go from excited to fighting much faster.
The pitties that cause most of the trouble have not only NEVER been taught self control, or trained, but encouraged to be "out of control". That is the danger.

And pitties have a strong genetic component, selected for, to NOT be aggressive to humans.

My lab is the sweetest dog I have ever met. You have that study wrong the study is that more labs attack than pit bulls and that is because the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in America so more people have them so there are more attacks. It is never the dogs fault if a dog attacks it is how the dog is raised. Pit bulls are very dominating dogs so you have to be a very good owner to have one that is calm and sweet. But even labs can be bad if they have stupid owners who treat their dogs like people and let them dominate them.
