Two things:

How prone am I to get a virus if I get Limewire?

What steps can I take to ensure a safe using experience, if that's possible with Limewire?

To some point it depends on what files you are going to get.
If you plan on going for executables (.exe files) you are at highest risk of getting infected files, if you are going to get .mp3 files, jpegs or movies you most likely wont get a virus.
As for savety:
In a peer to peer network (not only limewire) you are at risk of getting busted by industrial crawlers that spy for your IP.
You cant get files without giving your IP, the only way to at least trying to hide your IP would be by using a proxy server when running limewire. Turning off the sharing option wont hide your IP, it will only have you waiting for files longer - the more you are sharing the faster you get your DLs.

To avoid limewire "making your computer slow" make sure to configure it the way that limewire doesnt start automatically at systems start.

i've had limewire since december now and i've had no virises. i guess it depends on the computer though. some say it's great, others say it's horrible. for me, it just made my computer slow but i like it. it's good to delete the songs off of limewire after your done with them though, it makes the computer faster.

As long as you have a good internet security suite, you will be safe. It will still be possible to download and run a virus and/or spyware, but having a security suite will greatly reduce the chances of that happening.

Just get a good virus protecter and you should be fine. Turn off file sharing if you dont want others to copy your files.
