How can you feel like a backup plan when he clearly told you 1) He's in love with Clarissa and 2) He just wants to be your friend?
I hate to tell you, but YOU are the third wheel in this scenario. You need to stop hating, start congratulating and move on!

let him go and if he loves you he will come back...if you are available/ absence does wonder. better to expereince now than after you are married.
