I've been hearing a lot of talking about the new banking system at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this week about a progressive banking system on the track. I've heard places like Irwindale Speedway and other short tracks have this but I've never really heard anyone really give a clear explantion of what is it and how it works.

Progressive banking is this, Instead of a smooth transition from, say 5* at the apron up to 10* at the wall (like curving a piece of paper)...or... instead of one flat turn banked to the same degree from apron to wall (like holding a piece of paper flat but tilted up at one end),
progressive banking will have, say 5* at the apron and increases to 10* at the wall by means of 3 or 4 flat section's tilting up to the next degree like steps..... With a piece of paper, If you made 2 folds equally apart making 3 separate flat sections then opened the paper back up, then hold the first section at 5*. Then tilt the middle piece at the fold to 7*. Then tilt the top piece at the fold to 10*. That's progressive banking, 'stepping' up to the next degree* of banking.

Hope this makes sense!

The closer to the wall you get, the steeper the banking. Think of it like a bowl. It is semi-flat near the apron and much more steep near the wall. I am not sure of the exact degree on the bottom, but it is 20 degrees at the top in the turns.

They do this hoping to create multiple grooves.
