Depending on your state, police officers normally by department policy are required to ask for insurance.

Since driving with no insurance is a serious issue, most states check for it on every traffic stop.

Of course some states ( I believe AL) does not require insurance, so they would not be checking for it.

Most state require you to carry insurance on your auto. Does yours?

Here in NJ, when stopped by an officer they ask for license, registration and proof of insurance. If you don't have any one of them, they will ticket you for not having it - as well as the original violation they stopped you for.

Perhaps that's what happened with you.

Uninsured drivers are a huge problem on the roadways. It is also common for some uninsured drivers to be unlicensed as well. Since insurance provides both an incentive to drive safely (to maintain the driving privilege and keep rates low) it is in the state's interests to ascertain whether you have valid insurance.

So, if your state's laws allow an officer to check for insurance on a traffic stop, then they will do so.

All states require all licensed drivers to carry insurance. At any stop the police will ask for 3 things-license, registration, and proof of insurance to insure you are a legally licensed driver in a legally licensed and insured vehicle.

Because insurance is just that. An assurance that if you get into an accident, someone will be able to pay for the damage. The police simply enforce this because they can't have a bunch of drivers running around smashing into people and not being able to cover the bill.

Once you have presented probable cause for police to stop you and question you, then they would ask for proof of liability to confirm that you are obeying the law. As far as I know, I think it's the law in almost every state that you must have at least liability insurance to drive.

insurance along with registration is proof that the car is legal. it also proves who it belongs too. if they ask you for a driver licenses only, how do they know that the car is not stolen. any driver who isn't insured is only costing those who are alot of money. check your policy. there should be a tiny section that states how much you pay for UNINSURED motorists. now that sucks! PS. if you were ticketed i hope you fight it. seat belt use should be optional (for 18 & up)

Because in most states, you are required to show proof of financial responsibility. This is a routine check on any stop, as a car is required to be insured to be driven.

Because it is the law and law enforcement has that right to ask you when you are stopped for a moving violation. The law says you must have insurance to operate a motor vehicle and this means to drive one. Here's your sign!!!!

In any traffic stop in states that require Insurance...the officer upon making a stop MUST request Lisc. registration and Insurance...it is a compliance check as it is the law to have to carry those Docs.
