I'm answering your question about your boyfriend's child situation. I think your boyfriend should stop worrying about whats unfair to him and start worrying about what is best for his son. If he didn't want to take care of a kid he shouldn't have had one. Maybe you could spend less time protesting and pick up a few extra shifts to help him out.
