Ipods and the such are nice to listen to, but they take away your situational awareness. You may not hear those little noises which cue a normal listener to the fact that a vehicle is approaching. I knew a man who was assaulted in broad daylight, while walking and listening to his music playing device, which in those days was a "Walkman."
Wear the proper shoe. Ask your doctor or podiatrist which type of shoe is best for you. If you wear out your old shoes on the inside of the heel, for example, you "supinate" and so require a certain type of shoe. Flat feet require still another type. Wearing out the foot on the outside of the heel is called pronation. A good shoe salesperson should know these things.
Never run the same route in a row. Vary your running routes, so that no one can predict where or when you'll run. Carry the extra large size mace, in a buttpack at quick reach. A heavy cudgel is also good to carry, for vicious dogs and muggers.
Try to notice something new each time. On some days, I look for birds. Others, I look at different vehicles, or for architectural features.
Join a running club. There are runners in different categories. Not all of us are greyhounds. Some of us are turtles, others hares.
Treadmills make me feel like a gerbil or some caged rodent. However, in bad weather, they're better than inactivity. I try to listen to the news while running or pacing on it.
Sign up for races and run them. There's no rule that says you have to win. Just run to run it. In some of them, walkers are accepted. And you often get a tee shirt in the deal. Think of the "fellowship" or joy of competition.
Then there's always the military. They'll train you properly.

Run with friends, and if you have one available run on a nice trail in a scenic park rather than just around the block. Most importantly run with friends, but make sure they are people who are at about the same exercise level as you are. Its no fun being the one that can't keep up, and its also no fun having to slow down your progress so one of your less fit friends can keep up. Also if you just can't afford the bucks for a new i-pod you can get one of those shock proof CD players pretty cheap, or a pocket radio even cheaper.

Why do you have to have an ipod? Before I hurt my back (which may have been due to bad shoes, get the best with most bounce), I just had a portable radio. However, at least try to get one with digital tuning, in other words with buttons to tune in to the station. Any radio with the 'dial' is bad because it's tough to home in on a given station without it wondering off.
Plus I had a certain place to run and stayed with that route while I was running. It was fun seeing the different things on the same road...Good luck!

There is no fun way to run! It's just hard slog. The best bet is to run in a group, then you can help each other along. Look for a local running club.

Darn usic was going to be my first idea. Still could work. You can buy a generic mp3 player off ebay or at the store for cheap. That or find someone to run with. That will help you to go on the days you dont feel up to it, because you have someone else expecting you to go.

Embarass yourself. Sing randomly. Daydream. Pretend to trip and laugh at yourself. So many things to do while running. Oh yeah you can enjoy the scenery while you're running.

Attach some raw meat, preferably beef cutlets, to your running attire. Round up the Neighborhood dogs and RUN FOR YOUR GOD DAMN LIFE ONCE THEY ARE LET LOOSE.
