when it is a dot it means it is short and when there is a line it means that you should do that one a litlle longer. so if you were using a flashlight for example and there was a dot you wuold just turn it on and off real quick. But if there is a line then you would leave it on for a sec or 2.
this link explains it better and has a table of all the letters and numbers and also has american morse code and international morse code

Morse code is an international language comprised of dots and dashes. Actually, they're referred to as "dits" and "dahs"--the sound that each one makes when transmitted. Each letter in the alphabet is represented by some combination of dits and dahs. Stick a single space between each letter, and 2 or more spaces between words. Here's our standard alphabet in Morse code:
a= .- (pronounced "di dah"--you drop the t on the dit when it isn't the last symbol in the series of dits and dahs.
b= -... (dah di di dit)
c= -.-. (dah di dah dit)
d= -..
e= . (dit)
f= ..-.
g= --.
h= ....
i= ..
j= .---
k= -.-
l= .-..
m= --
n= -.
o= ---
p= .--.
q= --.-
r= .-.
s= ...
t= -
u= ..-
v= ...-
w= .--
x= -..-
y= -.--
z= --..
That's it. So, "yahoo answers" in morse code would be:
-.-- .- .... --- --- .- -. ... .-- . .-. ...
In case you're wondering how I know this, I was a Morse Code operator in the Air Force.

When the telegraph was invented it only could carry either a dit or a dah sound. So a code was invented using those 2 sounds to express every letter of the alphabet.
