Hello Sandie,
Very good question, and it deserves a very considered answer, I think if you are going to tell someone you love them, then you had really better mean it, it's not really a question of guilt, more thanit is building oneself a reputation as being a bit of a fibber, then people may well begin to lose trust in you, and none of us wants to be considered as untrustworthy do we?
I have loved my wife for over 42 years, and never lied to her in saying, I Love you Susan, and always kissed her tenderly right on her beautiful mouth, to just qualify my expression of my love, and with 11 children from the marriage, 4 of our own and 7 we adopted, and we worked lovingly hard to raise them into adulthood, and our reward? they all got together and paid for our lovely little Bungalow, for our retirement, just think honey, no more stairs for us to struggle with, because of our legs being sore almost every night, oh Sandie, what price love now, if you are in love, and you know you are, then tell him now, wake him and tell him "I Love You " and enjoy the knowledge that He Loves YOU right back....... Bye.......Tony M

NO! Telling someone you love them but not really meaning it. What is that supposed to mean? Why would you do that? Were you wanting something from them that telling a lie could only get you?
I am glad you felt guilty about it. It may stop you doing such a terrible thing again.
You obviously have not been in love or you would know that you are very fragile and open to being used by an unscrupulous person who plays on your feelings for them. I hope it doesn't happen to you but if it does you will realise the misery that comes with it.
In future tell them you care for them, like them a lot but don't tell anyone you love them if you don't.

Well, that sounds like a dussie. If you don't mean that, don't say it. It's unfortunate that people tend to throw that word around, then act like it has meaning. If you don't love someone don't tell them you love them until your ready to tell them that. If that is the case, then explain why now isn't the time to say you love them. Love is very important but to be fickle with it will always water down the feelings of love. Be true to the heart and never say it before you mean it. That way you'll avoid disappointment on both sides. Peace

No but before my current boyfriend who I've been with for 8 years, I'd go out with someone for a few weeks and when they started getting clingy and lovey dovey I was really horrible to them. I feel really guilty about it now when I think of it but I guess at the time I must have known it wasn't the right relationship.

No! Because even when i say "i love you," although it may not be to the extent that the person thinks, there is some amount of truth in what i'm saying; i do love them ... not just in that way, so i hardly ever feel guilty.

No I haven't. But I've been on the losing end of it. I thought someone cared about me as much as I her, bu I was betrayed, and stabbed in the back. I don't know if she ever felt guilty, except when she supposedly realized that she killed my former self.

No way, love is a word that should never be used lightly in situations like this, build someone up and then knock em down again, Nasty!
Still what goes around comes around i suppose!

Sure it's happened before then you just realize that people do it all the time just wait until someone say it to you it sucks but life moves on and you now know not to throw it around any more

Only once, but I wasn't really feeling that way that day. It's better than telling her no I don't love you today and breaking her heart because I was in a bad mood that day. So, no I didn't feel bad.

Haven't but you probably didn't mean any malice, just take it as 'a thread in the taperstry of life' in other words a minor blimp but be careful not to do again as it can cause lots of hurt!
