on BBCs Top gear, they are at an airport, and often I see a 747 in the background and it has 6 engines on 4 mounts. the two inner engines are bolted together. Can anyone help me find out what model aircraft this is, and if possible any links for further info?

Thanks

This is a test aircraft - probably Rolls or GE - it is a flying test bed for the new 787 engines - BABBBBAYYYYYYYYYY! Boeing is on a Roooooooooooooooooooooooooll !

Seriously - it is a test bed - it will say so on the fuselage - they like to actually run the hell out of new engines on real aircraft before they power that $200 million new 787 on first flight ..

The aircraft you saw could be a test bed for an engine manufacturer or it could be a case where an engine is being transported for maintenance. This is not unusual although this usually results in a 5 engine configuration.

What you saw may be a B-52 bomber, which is unusal as it does not land at airports. It may also be a test bed for a new Boeing aircraft.
