Hi i really fancy this guy who works at my hair salon i visit. He's a really lovely person and hes absolutely gorgeous. But what the hell am i supposed to do next? I can't just ask him out because its inappropriate and besides he seems as shy as i am, and it would be mortifying! Its okay if you can meet somebody drunkenly in a pub and chat them up, or get their number or talk online, or whatever, but what the hell do you do if you meet somebody who works in a shop or something like this and the only way you see them is when youre a customer? i cant even find out if hes single, and i don't know that much about him and going "so, are you single" seems too direct, so does any line of questioning like that. I'd die of embarrassment if i had to ask him that! Also cheesy chat up lines and flirting would give him the wrong impression about the kind of person i am. I really am stuck for ideas, and my hairdressing bill is going to be the ruin of me at this rate!

You are at a hairdressers, they chat. You say you are single and pretty shy, he says xxx. You say I like xyz, he says he likes xxx. You say do you ever go to the club/pub (wherever it is you hangout) he says no I go to xxx. If you have now established he is single and have found out where he drinks you can turn up, not the next night, but a few days later and say Hi, I thought I might give this place a try as you made it sound really nice. You have now made the first move without bombarding him with questions, he has volunteered the information. You can then say can I buy you a drink for doing such a good job on my hair. It is then up to him but you can retire with your dignity intact if there is no show of interest on his part. You left the move to him and although you engineered the meeting, no-one else will know. You don't have to tell anyone, just suggest to a friend that you try another pub/club that you heard about at the hairdressers. It therefore wouldn't be way out there if you happened to meet your hairdresser there (by chance).

You could begin by asking him what he does on his day off, and hope you get back some information. Try and find out where he drinks so that you can be in the same bar (accidently) Also try to fix it so that you can invite him to a party that your friend or someone is having, say I hope that you can come the more the merrier and keep it casual. Apart from all that sit back and hope he contacts you as your telephone number should be in their customer files. Good luck - sometimes you have to go for something that you really want.

Find out when his day off is and arrange an appointment with a colleague and sus out the situation. If he is free go for it, if not find another salon to get your hair done. Don't mean to be horrible but if you are so in to him it would be too hard on you of he has a partner.

Next time you're in this guy's company at the salon, bring up subjects that will indicate wether he's single or not, if you think he is when you are leaving give him a note with your e mail on it. Do it very discreetly, if he's available and interested it will excite him and he'll contact you. Good luck.

You're so funny! Any woman who can handle the King's English as well as you can can certainly fathom her imagination and come up with a sterling solution as to how to launch the space ship with a strange man. You could say "I wish you would curl something besides my hair," but that, too, would give the wrong impression. I truly believe you will come up with something long before we can out-guess you.
