I have a white parakeet, about a year. I think it is a male. When I bought him, I was told to supplement their seed diet with fruit, nuts, or veggies. However, I tried several different things and my parakeet doesn't eat anything but its seed. Any suggestions?

Dont force your bird to eat, just let it sit there. Other food will eventually perk its interest. Try also putting the food up to your mouth, and saying things like 'yummy' or 'mmm this is good food!' Budgies mimmic you, so it will get its attention if you are 'eating' it too. Remember, dont force it to eat, or put it up to its beak or against it, this will make your bird not want it. Try the same kind of food every day for about a week, and if they still dont eat it, try something else. Keets love lettuce, and its great for them because it has lots of water in it! You might want to start with that first!

Try cutting a slice of apple into very small cubes (match stick size) do the same with corn, spinach, peas, carrot, cut the little florette's from broccoli. Place about a tablespoon of 1 or 2 of these into a flat dish, sprinkle about 2 teaspoons of seed over the top, just press the seed into the veggies a little and remove the normal seed dish. Your bird will pick the seed out of the dish to start with, but will be tasting the veg/fruit at the same time. You will need to replace the food morning and night as it will sour the seed. Watch, and once your bird starts to eat the veg/fruit you can then put it in its own dish separate from the seed. Be patient it can take a while. Good luck.
