My friend and I have been arguing about this for a while... What are better... modern weapons (tanks, guns, etc.) or old weapons (swords, arrows and bows, etc.)? Since I am an old fashioned person, I am in love w/ swords of any kind. However, my friend is in love with any type of gun basically.

Swords would cause a more painful and suffering death, don't you think? I agree w/ my friend that guns are more effective though I don't do modern. If you want to attack someone, might as well have them really feel it. Though practice is needed for both. Weapons are improving but now all the so called fun is gone. Not that wars are fun.

Better for what killing? Modern weapons are better maybe not as romantic but definitely better. That's why they are called modern weapons. As warfare evolved so did technology as did the instruments of death. A sword took more skill to use and you really needed to know what you where doing to be an effective killing machine with one. Guns on the other hand are deadlier and much more powerful.

It depends on what you intend to do, and how you want to do it. If you want to kill efficiently, but with little regard to stealth, guns are without a doubt the ideal weapon. However, if you are looking to show class and finesse, ancient weapons are where it's at. As well, it has been argued that ranged weapons (ie. guns and bows) are a dishonorable way to vanquish foes.

There is no doubt that guns can be artistic and esthetically pleasing, but to the sword lover, they are but clunky mechanical contraptions. Swords offer a chance to express the user's individuality, what with the myriad of styles and fittings. Also, you will never see a beautiful pattern-welded gun barrel, nor a rifle with a subtle hamon. Swords are by far the most elegant weapons.

I am a gun nut by most peoples definition but I am with you on this sword issue.
In fact so much so that I think dueling with swords should once again be legalized.
One thing it may save a lot of innocent bystanders from two cowboys out side of a nightclub shooting up the whole street, putting less holes in the guy they are shooting at than in the bystanders and peoples autos.
I also think the legal age for dueling should be 16, maybe even 15 years of age, ala Romeo and Juliet style encounters but not against men in say twentys.
The range where dueling would be legal could be allowed for things like slander, bigamy, adultry no not man against women but manoymano or woman against woman. To be fair with swords it would not seem to make a difference sexually in capabilitys and if agreed upon before hand why not.
Insults or rudeness should also be allowed as a legal cause, if witnessed by others of course no heresay BS allowed.
Just think on a weekend, all must be in public sight, a trip to the park to watch last weeks affronts decided would be more interesting than watching the squirrels.
No hacking instruments though just finely balanced rapiers or fencing foils allowed as then it would add a sense of balance and poise, a ballet to the wounding or death of ones opponents.
Big herken broadswords delimbing a man and guts and blood all over the place would not do.
A womans troth being fought over by two brave virulent men, or asking for an apology for slander to her virtue and if not accepted a challenge must be honored.
If a bloke will not fight he must be ostracized from civilized men.
Let him join the army and use a gun.

Having them "really feel it" doesn't matter. What matters is ending their life before they do yours. On which is cooler, is based on opinion. On which is effective, guns tenfold. Lets say your skilled with a sword and it takes you a half second to swing the sword. Thats still more time than it takes an inexperienced person with a gun to pull the trigger. On running out of ammo, you don't really need 7 bullets. You only need one two kill. Assuming you miss, you have 6 other chances. With a sword, one miss and he can kill you. This is all ignoring the fact of distance, and that both are experienced.

back around 1500 AD there was an english knight. he trained for nearly 3/4 of his life with his sword and his horse in the art of combat. conversly there was a peasent who was on the other side of the war. he trained for 3/4 of a day to use his new musket. when the two meet on the battlefield the knight charged toward the peasent, only to be hit by the musket ball fired from the peasent 30 yards away. the ball tore through the knights armour killing him shortly after. the lesson of the story? guns are better then swords.

The gun of course! That is if you want a weapon you would use, but if you are looking for beauty then the sword. But if you are in a fight you better use a gun, otherwise if you use a sword you would dead quickly.

There's a reason the native Americans gave up their bows for cavalry rifles. Guns are more lethal, have a greater effective range, and are generally capable of causing greater casualty to more enemies than "old fashioned" weapons. So, from a strictly combatant viewpoint - your friend is correct. From a fantasy, romance, or chivalry standpoint, you may have a point; but your point would be moot from your cold, dead, bullet-riddled corpse.

guns and bows or projectile weapons of any kind are for wimps because a weedy untrained kid can cap a hardened warrior in his head from a mile away with a twitch of his finger wheres the honour in that, what happened to the days when the leaders would be at the front of the battle waving a sword around and getting hacked up with their men im not saying war is good but if we must do it i think a good old fashioned sword is the best way... plus they look really cool, and it must be such a rush chopping up people who raped and pillaged your village aaah sweet revenge!!!

Swords are pretty good to have for collection, swordsfighting is a plus but they are no match for the gun (modern tech.)
