A whole bunch of stars means nothing to us, really. How many and how big, even if they do vary in size and color?

Your tattoo artist would be the one to best advise you so he can trace the pattern on your back and work around it. Expect to pay an art fee deposit.

where on your back? how large is the area? post a link to a picture so we can see. it's hard to tell when we don't know exactly what we're trying to cover.
you may want to consider going to a custom tattoo artist, one that is experienced at doing coverup tattoos.
not all artists are good at them and i have definitely seen some horrible coverups. take your time and make it a tattoo worth having so you won't be seeking to cover that tattoo in a few years. (it definitely happens)

Something bigger, and probably darker.
