I know cockerspaniels are good with cats and kids. Also a Pomeranian is a sweet breed. Only thing with those breeds are they need to be brushed alot and cockers need there ears cleaned all the time. Also I got a small dog from the pound a mix mutt and he is wonderful with everyone. So you might want to check your local shelters for a dog. Be sure to bring the whole family.

You are going to want to look at toy and terrier dogs. A lot will depend on the best dog for you. A few things to think about are how much space do you have? for example,. a jack russell terrier have lots of energy and even though they are small they jump and like to be played with a lot. If you do not have time, then you will also want to stay away from poodles, as they require a lot of love and attention. I persoanlly like maltese as they are small, good apartment dogs and hypoallergetic.
Also terriers can be very hard to train. I had a terrier (silky) who was terrfied of rain and storms to the point that if it was wet, she would not go to the bathroom outside and would hold it or go inside the house. I was scared she was going to either kill herself or cause a bladder infection. Terriers, from a professional standpoint, I have spoken to many dog trainers say that they can be almost impossible to train. Obviously it is possible to train terriers, but they are very stubborn, unlike say a golden retriever.
You also want to insure that the dog you get is going to be good with children, and again the age of your children will also depend on the dog. If your children are very young, you may want to keep the dog's hair clipped very short, as they may pull on the hair (i know i used to do that when i was a kid). This may be a factor in choosing a dog that naturally has short hair.

About the cat thing, most dogs if raised with cats from birth/puppies, will do fine with them. I like cocker spaniels they're cute and family friendly. Chihuahuas are a little snappy for me. There are also like miniature collies I don't know what the breed is but cute also. There's also another breed I know it by "Nanny dogs" they are good with children I think they are a terrier type of dog. Hope this helps!

Getting along with cats is a learned behavior that only you can introduce to the dog. They are natural enemies !! A really good small breed would be of the terrier group. smart and full of energy !! Great watch dogs too !!

If a puppy is raised with a cat, they'll get along fine. Our cat actually mothered our puppy, they slept together, cuddled and played. They kept playing when the puppy hit 80 pounds, but their relationship changed, the baby started protecting the mom. They were close their entire lives. We've always had both cats and dogs, never any problems.

Any breed can learn to get along with cats.
Personally I have a Rottie 2 Shih-tzu's and 15 rescue cats that all get along together nicely.
Mostly, introduce them slowly with a lot of praise and treats and they'll be playing together in no time at all.
Another advantage to the smaller dog is they can easily be litterbox trained.

Hey, well I have a pekingese and she is a good house dog, but I have never seen a dog that gets along with cats. You'll probably just have to find some people that will let you carry the dog/puppy home to see if it gets along with your cat before you purcahse it.

It's not so much the breed, but the attitude of the individual dog. Volunteers at your local shelter can help you make an informed choice.
