What are the withdrawal effects? How long does it last? I have been taking since November. I was taking at bedtime only .25 -.50mg. I only took a few times a week at first, but took it pretty everynight pretty much for the month of Feb. I want to stop this drug and I haven't taken it since Tuesday. I am feeling really crappy. My head hurts and I am having severe mood swings? Any feedback would be much appreciated. I have contemplated taking until I can see a doctor to help prescribe something to help the withdrawal affects; however I really just want to stop esp. since I haven't taken in a few days and feel I am on my way.

You know it's a control substance.
Ask your doctor.
I did come off a long time ago. I was weened off.
Sounds like you may not have the right prescription. Again, talk with your Doctor or Pharmacist.

Xanax is a benzodiazepine. All benzos including Xanax develop tolerance and addiction. The addiction is not much different from the addiction to alcohol or certain drugs. You need a greater dose to maintain the same effect over time. There are withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop, especially abruptly. If you are on a high dose when you try to stop, the withdrawal symptom are more severe, and can even be dangerous. More people die from withdrawal symptoms from Benzos and alcohol than from Heroin. People can come off Xanax, but it is difficult and takes time. I recommend that it be done under the guidance of a qualified physician.

It's too bad you are feeling side effects. I took Zoloft once and I just stopped cold turkey. I had no side effects. I think the best way is to decrease your doseage as in weaning yourself off of it. I'm not sure why you are taking it, but stopping it all together could be why you are experiencing these side effects. Maybe taking one every other night to start and then slowly decreasing from there. It's like weaning a baby from a bottle. It takes a little time, but you can do it. Talk to your doctor about it first. That's the best thing to do. I'm not an expert.

Your symptoms sound consistent with Xanax withdrawal. The best way to get off of Xanax is slowly, under a doctor's supervision. There are prescription medications that can also help control your withdrawal symptoms. Please seek help. Xanax withdrawal is very unpleasant, including such things as elevation of blood pressure and heart rate, insomnia, erratic behavior and many others.
