How is it that Lee Krasner has not been mentioned? She lived for a while, in the shadow of her famous husband, Jackson Pollock, but after his death she went on to be recognised as one of the most talented "abstact expressionist" painters! It also became clear that Pollock relied heavily on her opinions for his work in progress.
She certainly gets my vote as a great artist male or female!

Check out Artemesia Gentileschi. Italian Baroque painter. The first woman painter to be allowed into the Academie and the first woman painter to be comissioned for her work. Her work has a rather narrow scope but it is very impressive for a woman who is in a profession dominated by men at the time.

don't think there is just one. there are many who greatly contributed to the art world. it's like asking who the greatest man painter was. to broad a question and so many areas to cover. besides everyone has their own opion as to greatness!

this is impossible to answer, as for thousands of years womens art has not been valued or encouraged - therefore so many women artists have disappeared into obscurity - or worse, never been allowed to be artists in the first place. Ask this question again in a thousand years, it might be easier to answer

Her work is very crude.

The better ones are Gwen John, de Lempicka, Anjelica Kaufmann, Morisot, Cassat and Kahlo.

None really are any great shakes though, to be blunt about it.
