You should not be that long exposed to the sun... it could damage your skin, and give you long term effects like skin cancer and premature aging...
90% of skin damaged is caused by the sun and environmental factors so you should ALWAYS protect your skin, even on cloudy days, because UV RAYS penetrate them...
So I recommend you don't stay exposed directly to the sun longer than 45 minutes, and of course use sunscreen with a SPF not lower than 20, it will let you get a nice tan without damaging your skin =]
DON'T EXPOSE TO THE SUN WITHOUT SUNBLOCK... EVER...

First, 3 hours a day isn't safe for your skin...you will probably develop skin cancer....BUT...not to be a total downer, like the first poster said, my sister suns for about 15-20 minutes a day and gets a nice tan from that. It just depends on your skin type/hair color. You could also go to one of those tanning places, and get the myst spray on tan that lasts for 7 days, totally worth it. Good luck!

Is a Suntan Worth Your Life?

Although a suntan may look great when you are in your twenties, the effects it will have on your skin in just a few short years are not pretty, or healthy. A suntan, which seems to be the badge of good health and vitality, is in fact the opposite. A tan is the body's desperate attempt to protect itself
from the sun's harmful rays. The sun's ys can kill you.

The sun's rays, which are called ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays (UVA and UVB rays) damage your skin. This leads to early wrinkles, cataracts (UV rays have been found to be associated with various eye conditions, such as cataracts), skin cancer, and other skin problems. Being in the sun
often, over time, even if you don't burn, can lead to skin cancer. It does not matter if you acquired the tan under the sun or at a tanning salon; either way, the UV rays are still bad for your skin.

Sunlight is the leading cause of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in the United States and accounts for about 2% of all cancer deaths1. In 2004, about 55,100 individuals in the United States are expected to develop melanoma and approximately 7,910 will die
of it1. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma (together referred to as non-melanoma skin cancer), and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common forms of skin cancer. If left untreated, they can
cause substantial illness and cause considerable damage and disfigurement. However, if they are detected and treated early they have a cure rate of more than 90%. Malignant melanoma causes more than 75% of all deaths from skin cancer. This disease can spread to other organs, most
commonly the lungs and liver. Malignant melanoma diagnosed at an early stage usually can be cured, but melanoma diagnosed at a late stage is more likely to spread and cause death. The incidence of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer appears to be increasing2,3.

thats really bad for your skin. like im not even kidding, but like really really really bad. it is bad damage and just waiting for skin cancer to happen. but if you have to have a tan, use jergens bronzing lotion, it works really well and makes your skin smooth, and tan for no longer than half an hour, using lots of sunblock. still bad for your skin tho.
