I know I need some software for it. Anyone have any free program they'd recommend?

Well, I can't say which I would recommend. However, I would first try Videohelp.com and click on the tools section (left hand side-red "lists" section.

you have to convert them to the proper format, there are several sights that you can use to do this, i have a friend that does it alot but i myself do not. i know it is because of the format though. but hey i just called her and she said you need DIVX to DVD. you can get the software free on a sight called ARES but often you will need to change the format twice to get the movies to play . you first change it to divx to dvd format, and then change it to dvd format. kind of a long process but the movie companies are making it a real pain to be able to do i guess.
