We put in Wilson Art laminate. It looks identical to Corian but was less expensive. (I sure can't say cheap) The laminate is only about a 1/4" deep, but that is enough to cover any scratches we may get.

We just re-did our kitchen and got pre-fab granite. It was a lot cheaper than custom granite and we love it. The surface is the same. The only differences are that you don't have the same selection of colors and you have to take whatever kind of edge it comes with. The actually grind the edges in China or India or South America and ship the finished slab to the US. Then your fabricator just cuts it to fit your counter top.
Wherever you live there are probably numerous tile/countertop stores. Just go shop around a bit. We found a color we liked and had an edge we were ok with. While it wasn't our first choice, now that it's in, we love it.

We just put new cabinets and counter tops in our kitchen. The cabinets are top quality but we decided to go with laminate counter tops. they are so much less expensive, the pattern looks like granite or corian and it is inexpensive enough that if I tire of it in a few years, I can change the counter again. Put your $$ into the cabinets. We did Decora, they are certified KCMA.

Anything real hard will break anything that falls on it. I prefer laminate-pre-cut. I have a 5 ft section of green colors. I can change it anytime I want and it was very inexpensive. It has the back splash and curves at front edge.

One word..... Corian. I just had it installed in my kitchen. Lasts MUCH longer than laminate and can be sanded down to a "like new" finish in the event of scratching or gouging.

Go with Corian. It's cheaper (at least here it is) and you will be just as happy with it.
