You are experiencing trapped wind. It can be very painful. It gets stuck under your ribcage and presses against your lung, which can give you sharp pains when you try breathing. A hot water bottle placed on the back area can help alleviate the pain but you need to see your G.P. who will prescribe tablets to stop it happening so often. He will also give you a check up to relieve your anxiety. I know it sounds ridiculous but I can assure you I am very serious, having suffered from the condition myself. I have had a number of tablets until I found one which works.

The standard questions I ask is, when does this happen?... Before or after a meal? what kind of food have you eaten?. What makes the pain worse...what makes it better? Does the pain radiate to anywhere else? Is the pain dependent on position of your body? Your best bet would be to consult your MD and have him check you over. Be sure you have the answers to the above questions ready for him,

sounds like it could be a rib head out of place. your ribs really do not have the same excursion as in heavy or deep breathing. If you pain is on during deep inhalation or exhalation, I suspect rib.
trauma is not necessary for displacement of rib heads.

As a healthcare provider I can tell you that I would do a chest Xray but my gut feeling is that you need your gallbladder tested (an ultrasound and a HIDA scan). Gallbladder pain can be exactly as you are describing yours. I would do a chest xray simply because it's easy enough to do...and the pain is located in your thorax.......but if I had to bet....I'd bet on the gallbladder.
