He needs to speak to a professional either a Doctor, Psychologist/Psychiatrist or even a Priest. Your friend needs to stop drinking so he can think clearly and come to terms with the source of his depression. It could be that he has clinical depression which definitely requires medical help. I would advise you to get him to a Doctor as soon as possible, as good as AA is for helping alcoholics, it wont be able to cure his depression.

Watch him drink even more. Once enough gets into his system he'll fall over. After enough brain cells die he will become a DIFFERENT PERSON that most can ignore.
At ten pints a day I'd say his mind locked onto the abuse.
He is not normal now. You don't want to see the end.
A snowball in Hades, that's correct, isn't it?

hmmm...is this him drinking to get drunk or is he just 'getting used' to that amount of alcohol?
as young lads 10 pints was pathetic, we had to drink more....only after a lot of this type of abuse and walking soberly from the night club did i start to realise what a total waste it was....i went through everything i had to drink and shocked myself.
what can you do to help him?
the answer there is not a great deal i'm afraid, he has to realise he has a problem with drink, he wont see it that way though, and that, my friend is the hard part, how can you persuade him without falling out with him?
you are the one that knows him, try to find him another interest, try to find ways to keep him away from the pub, if he drinks in the house, get him out of the house.
the best way could be to make him think he is helping you,

When I drank too much, I made myself drink a pint of water before each alcoholic drink. Reduced it loads and don't drink at all now

I'm going out on a limb here. I might get
reported. I spend a helluva lot of time
on this Answers thing, and it is
very interesting, time-consuming,
and a distraction. Suggest
this to your friend.
I keep the beer over there,
I don't need to buy another keyboard soon.
Good luck to your friend, but if he is
a threat to others, or is wrecking his
marriage, or wants to be 100, I'd accept
it and go on.

Well, yeah, more likely than not he is an alcoholic and there is not one thing you can do to stop his drinking. Get him some information about AA in your area and offer to take him to a meeting and get yourself to Alanon.
Alcohol is a depressant, which will make him even more depressed, btw.
TO DRUNKENDWARF- we'll save a seat for you in AA for when you're broken down enough by alcohol to get some help because you need it

he needs therapy nothing else would work: 10 pints is too much
how's his family and friends - if he has a broken relationship or loss in financials, no amount of comfort can make him feel better
always be there for him if he's that close a friend for you - it's your support he needs at this juncture

you sound like a good friend. if you want him to reduce his drinking you could drink some of it for him. jk not funny. your friend needs help. depending on the age of your friend...how does your friend afford to buy all this alcohol? talk to others regarding this problem..... teachers, parents, family members, friends. whatever it takes to get help. good luck.
