Hair color is measured in levels and tones. Depending on your natural level depends on what is needed to get you blonde.
Level 1 is black and 10 is the lightest blonde.
So if your hair is a natural level 6 getting it blonde should not be a problem, however if it is darker bleach would be needed and that could possible damage your hair.
Haircolor can only lift natural hair color 3 -4 levels then bleach is needed.
I as a hairstylist would not recommend going completely blonde, the grow-out stage will be completely unbearable. You will be back in the salon ever 3 weeks. Try with just a heavy top weave first to see if you even like the color.

Bleaching your hair strips everything off of your hair and scalp; all oils and moisture. After you are done you need to put moisture back into your hair. Be consistant in moisturizing and getting trimmings so your ends dont dry out, which will cause split ends and breakage.
Once you strip your hair by dying or perming, etc. shampoo and conditioner are important, use something meant for dyed hair and maybe do some oild treatments every so often.
If your hair gets a bit frizzy use some anti frizz solution.
Also, shampooing everyday will prevent your hair from retaining/making necessary oils- wash every other day and condition every day if you like. Dont purchase shampoos and conditioners that coat your hair, once your hair is coated is looks nice for a while but it also prevents moisture from getting in. If you do use shampoos w/coaters, shampoo with a coat stripper. Suave is one of the cheapest haircare lines without strippers, and Pantene is a coater.
Make sure you get it done right so it doesnt turn red, good luck :)
PSSSSS: Ammonia is what turns your hair orange. Get it done professionaly, AND dont listen to others trying to make you feel bad about wanting to do it- you live once, why not experience a different hair color- BIG DEAL! You go girl!

How dark is your hair?
Regardless of this, you should most definitely go to a professional salon and get it done. Salons will generally do a free consultation. I would talk to people about a good colorist, get some pictures of the color you are looking for, and ask a stylist. This will also give you a chance to get a feel for the salon and the person who will be making a drastic change in your hair. Whatever you do... don't do it at home!!!!!!
My hair is a dark blond/light brown and I have it bleached a really really light blond. I go to the salon and I use a good conditioner. My hair is in great shape!

my daughter was a lovely brunette, and spent the best part of last summer dyeing her hair blonde twice!!. It looked good to start with, but after a while it turned ginger, she tried to dye it back to brunette, it went light brown, dyed it again, it went sort of dark brown, then she dyed it black. 4 weeks afte dyeing it black, she now has two-tone hair, half brown/black at the front, light brown at the back. which she likes!!!
You will be stripping/bleaching all the colour from your hair to turn it blonde. It will be more fragile. you must make sure you protect with serums when using heat, and deep condition because the ends of your hair can get very dry.
Be careful seek professional advice, regarding how the blonde will fade.
GOODLUCKxxxxxx

I did it for quite a few years, I went to a very good (and expensive) hairdresser and my hair stayed in good condition throughout, after a few years they dyed it back to my natural colour and it was fine. Also I have very very long hair, so if mine didn't look to bad at the end of it then yours shouldn't either :)

Its very bad - you will have peroxides applied to your hair and scalp - peroxide burns.
Too much bleaching will eventually damage the hair permanently to the point of the hair breaking off in your hand.
You will be forever getting your roots done.
Not a good idea - not good for your body or your hair.

I did it and it looked great. Only thing is you need to bleach before adding colour. This makes the hair go like straw, so plenty of good conditioner needed. Hair yet to grow comes back normal so if you keep having regular cuts your hair will be back to its good old self in no time.
